Presto 3510 FlipSide Belgian Waffle Maker

We bought the Presto 3510 FlipSide to replace a faux pro waffler made by the blender company who shares its name with Fred W's Glee Club. That one cost twice the price and lasted a mere three years before going to pieces. It was "Pro" in name only.

Presto took a simpler and possibly more durable approach: Engineer the hinge on a traditional counter top Belgian waffle maker so it can flip 180 degrees and let gravity work its special magic. The entire weight of the baking platform is supported by the counter top, not by a pair of screws driven into failure-prone plastic.

When I unpacked the iron and set it on the counter, I noticed that the upper grid "floated" slightly when the grids were resting at the left side of the hinge. It might just be a mass-production variance but it was cause for concern because the iron has to close tightly for proper baking. When I flipped them to the right, the grids closed firmly, so the left side became the filling side and the right, the baking side. Do the same when yours arrives.

The nonstick grids are deep enough to fall into, with dimpled tapered studs that assist in releasing the baked waffle. The baking surface is surrounded by a fairly generous overflow rim. At 1350 watts, it bakes hotter than the 1200 watt pro-look model. The Presto 3510 FlipSide lacks a darkness control but you can compensate by adjusting the baking time. What's important is the initial temperature when the batter hits the grids, and if you turn a darkness control too low, the grids are too cool to "fry" the outside. What you end up with is a textured pancake, not a real waffle.

The battery-powered timer is a nice feature but not really a necessity if your kitchen, like mine, has plenty of timers (the stove, the kitchen scale, the microwave oven).

The waffles come out about an inch and then some in height with a crisp, crackly exterior and a cloud-fluffy interior. We make our waffles from biscuit-and-baking mix but use the professional technique of separating the eggs and beating the egg whites before folding them into the batter. Baking time is 3 minutes for a waffle that would cost you at least a 10-spot plus tax and a tip on a hotel room service menu.

Waring Pro WMK600 Double Belgian-Waffle Maker

Off the bat, this is a fine Waring Pro WMK600 Double Belgian-Waffle Maker. With some careful experimentation, perfect waffles churn out at a fast clip thanks to the double-sided design. What I like is that each side operates independently of the other. This was a concern of mine, and the machine is smart enough to let you know which side is done, when it's done. The browning dial allows for accommodating a wide variety of custom waffle formulas, and each batter will require adjustment to ensure good waffle color and texture.

Also, I can see why some of the hinges can fail on flip units. AS the batter puffed up, it can put strain on the hinge possibly damaging it. My suggestion is to use less mix at first and creep up to full with your mix so you can determine the right amount to use that will not stress it. I had the top waffle pop the top open so I can see how it could stess the hinge.

I gave this Waring Pro WMK600 Double Belgian-Waffle Maker a 4 our of 5 because I hate the fact that there is no indicator on the handles which way to turn it. I ended up putting a silver sharpie arrow on each to indicate which direction it will turn freely in. I think some could damage the unit if forced to turn in the wrong direction. Also, I found that you had to be particular how you took the waffle out. If taken out by a dividing line or not causes them to stick more easily. I did find that sticking was lessened the more I used it. I seasoned per the instructions but set it up on #6 temp setting during seasoning. It could be I need a bit more oil in the mix, too.

To me this is a real keeper. The waffles are crispy and delicate within. The outer crispy layer is thin real nice. I had a 10+ year old cuisinart before and it made the crispy layer a bit too think. this is much thicker and better.

The Waring Pro WMK600 Double Belgian-Waffle Maker doesn't have the same waffle pattern as the wmk300 or wmk300a. The WMK600 Waffle pattern is smaller and requiring more batter then the WMK300. Also the 600 only has 200 more watts to cook the two waffles.. As a result the waffles takes longer to cook and it is a challenge to have golden brown waffles which are fully cooked on the inside. The WMK 600 doesn't have sufficient wattage to cook 2 waffles at the same time. You will find that the cooking times increases dramatically compared to the wmk300, this decreases the quality of your waffle.

It may work with the traditional American recipes, but if you want to cook traditional Belgium waffles, which are very light and crispy. Bottom line the waffle iron doesn't provide enough heat/wattage. The single waffle maker wmk300 or wmk300a still has the better waffle pattern (larger squares) and providing better heat transfer to the batter. The WMK600 has only 1400 watt and doesn't produce enough to cook 2 waffles at the same time. I gave the unit away and return to the store and purchased two wmk300 waffle makers.
